About Me

George Buckingham

Hello, I'm George Buckingham, an enthusiastic PHP developer from Bournemouth on the sunny south coast of the UK. I have over 8 years experience working with individuals, businesses and web agencies to develop bespoke, effective web solutions that deliver results. I call myself a web developer, but I don’t just design and build websites – I solve problems using the web.

At present, I'm working full-time as a PHP developer for Yammayap, specialising in building Laravel web applications that empower businesses to grow.

I'm also a freelance web developer. I take on WordPress, Laravel and HTML / CSS development projects working directly with my clients, or as an outsource resource for agencies. Contact me if you have a project you'd like to discuss.

Laravel Developer

My current focus is developing bespoke web applications, built on Laravel. I'm able to work with the base toolkit and expand on it to develop solutions to real-life business problems. I've got a good understanding of, and experience with most areas of the framework & eco-system, including extras such as Laravel Passport. As well as traditional all-in-one monolith style applications, I'm also comfortable developing applications with an API first approach.

Recently, I've developed CRM applications to run the new business & renewals departments for a specialist home insurance company. The systems I built have helped increase their productivity and improve their customer service. I've also developed a scheduling and financial forecasting application for a fast growing creative agency. It helps them them to plan their workload and staff requirements, whilst keeping a close eye on the status of their multi-currency finances.

WordPress Developer

WordPress is both loved and hated amongst developers. For me, it's a case of the right tool for the right job, used in the right way. I build custom content managed marketing style websites for businesses / organisations. It's important to know exactly what code is running on a site, so I completely avoid off-the-shelf themes and keep third-party plugins to a minimum. This helps prevent issues with poor performance and keeps security risks to a minimum.

I always build my custom WordPress themes on Advanced Custom Fields (for better data structure) & Timber (for better code structure) and develop bespoke plugins for extra functionality where necessary. I've built WordPress sites for schools, local organisations, hotel chains and international businesses.

PHP Developer

Away from Laravel and WordPress, I still have strong PHP skills - I'm confident in writing my own packages, integrating with APIs and debugging problems. I try to keep up-to-date with the latest PSR standards and am currently getting to grips with PHPUnit for automated testing.

Using our old in-house framework at Yammayap, I've developed web applications to do things such as managing the regular maintenance of luxury motor boats, for running the bookings process for a holiday lettings company and to handle job applications for a recruitment company. All of these projects presented their own business-logic and technical challenges that needed to be overcome.

Web Developer

I often code the front-end for my applications so have good HTML and CSS skills, and some JavaScript (jQuery) experience, although frameworks such as React and Vue aren't my area of expertise. Like most developers I'm experienced with Bootstrap, but I'm starting to favour Tailwind for my go-to CSS framework.

My work is always version controlled with GIT and I often write custom deploy scripts for Capistrano. I setup & manage LEMP (Linux, NGINX, PHP, MySQL) servers and am currently exploring the AWS platform.

My Background

I picked up an interest in computers from an early age, but gained a passion for coding in college as part of a general IT course. I then spent a year advising customers on computer components and CCTV systems in an electronics store, before deciding to pursue my interest in development by going to university.

I graduated in 2012 and was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Web Development. Areas of study included PHP development, front end coding, database administration, usability and networking. For my dissertation I developed a project management system for small web agencies – the implementation and final report were both marked at 92%.

As part of my degree, I undertook a 1 year placement as a developer for Yammayap, a local web agency. I often worked alongside an in-house designer, so I picked up an eye for design as well as accelerating my development skills beyond those being taught on my course. Today, 8 years on, I still work for Yammayap, leading our bespoke Laravel development projects.

Away From Work

When I'm not coding, you'll likely find me out cycling on both the roads and off-road tracks around Dorset and Hampshire. I also have a strong passion for travel - I'm continually planning for my next trip away. The great outdoors is always calling my name - I enjoy exploring the hills and mountains on the UK and wild camping. I enjoy trying to take photos on my cycling / travel / outdoors adventures, although I'm no professional photographer. I'm @gbuckingham89 on Instagram.
